Max Patch is what I like to call the crowning jewel of the NC mountains.
If you haven’t been here yet, then I suggest packing up your car right this second and heading there right now. Yes, really, it’s that amazing. I actually cried the first time I reached the top of Max Patch because I couldn’t take how beautiful the view. Perhaps that’s a little bit dramatic, but when you see it you’ll know what I mean.
There’s a couple of things you need to know before you visit this stunning location:
- You lose cell signal almost as soon as you turn off any main/major road. Make sure you plan accordingly beforehand! I can tell you from experience that it’s incredibly frustrating trying to figure out where you are on the back roads with no way to communicate with the outside word.
- Max Patch is located on a privately owned road. Meaning, if there’s a foot of snow on the ground you can still get there. Just be careful! Even if there’s no snow in Asheville, there could still be snow.
- There are two trails to reach the wide open, grassy field. If you’re in shape and don’t mind a little 2-5 minute suffer fest, take the harder trail. It’s an uphill trail that will take you right to the top, but trust me when I say that it’s crazy steep. And if you don’t mind walking up a far easier, gradually inclining 15 minute trail, then definitely take the easier trail on your left.
- Parking can get kinda crazy. If the weather is beautiful outside, know that you most likely will have to parallel park on the side of the road. People travel from all over to come see these beautiful views (as they should).
Now that you’re adequately prepared, get your butt in the car and head over to Max Patch ASAP.
